The Town Theatre of Short Tract was organized in the spring of 1990 to give the residents of northern Allegany County an outlet to develop and enjoy the theater. For most people, aside from school productions and perhaps college plays, there is little opportunity in this area to participate in drama. Adults of the community are especially deprived of a wonderful opportunity to explore their creativity, and this organization was formed with the hope of addressing those needs.
Initially our first major production, the musical “L’il Abner” also helped to support the efforts of the Concerned Citizens of Allegany County in their fight against a radioactive dump. Since then, any profits have been used to develop the Town Theatre’s resources for future productions and to provide core money for royalties. We are approved as a non-profit organization in New York State. Our member roster now stands as approximately 50 members and our group is very proud of all the hard work and initiative that these members have shown, and their willingness to go out of their way to give the community enjoyable good quality theater at an affordable price. There have been over 100 people involved in our productions during the last three years.
To date, we have done nine productions for the community, staged in a diversity of places including Fillmore Central School, Angelica Library, Belmont and Belfast Central Schools, Houghton Wesleyan Church and back home at the Granger Town Hall.
We are currently rehearsing for our spring play entitled, “The Million-Heirs” by Delmar Burkitt. Dr. Dawn Bennett will be the director and production dates are scheduled for the first weekend in April.
This summer we will be doing the musical entitled “The Music Man” which will be directed by Chris Daniels and in the fall, a children’s play, to be directed by Joan Milke and Linda Brown. We are always happy to see new people, and anyone who thinks they might like to get involved in theater is warmly invited to come try out. It can be a great form of relaxation and fun.
For anyone who would like to become a member or patron of the Town Theatre, you should contact Carolyn Rickettes, Treasurer at xxx-xxxx or you can send a $5.00 annual membership fee to Carolyn Ricketts. Annual membership includes regular newsletters to let you know about meetings, auditions, etc., and will also give you $1.00 off the ticket price of all Town Theatre plays during that season.
So come join us, and help the Town Theatre of Short Tract grow and prosper.
